Building a Better Poem

I write your name

on a napkin at the bar,

place it under my glass,

drink till I see it again

at the bottom

half a dozen times tonight

before I crash

I will build a better poem

for you

with wet fragments, torn from napkins,

and ink stained to finger backs

I will build a better poem

for you

I’ll keep trying every night

before I crash
