Sugar Properties

For A.W.

What if I could reach out and touch you from here?

What difference could it make?

Just one finger across the divide,

One finger down the length of your spine?

Trace your eyes,

Trace your eye line

With a finger in the sugar stick,

I promise you no more waste,

No more waste.

My eyes move through clouds and stars,

To so many plains—

Where you are—

Where things might make sense

If you’d take my aim to you.

What if I could touch you from here?

What difference a touch could make,

Just one touch down your side,

One finger and you’d be mine?

So I say—

So I’d try—

Trace your eyes,

Like a line,

Back to the sugar stick,

And eyes that can close on mine.
