who knew little of her surroundings,
reached down into her chest,
pulled out her heart like molten metal,
dripping orange around her wet fingers.
She placed the glistening organ on the table.
who knew little of this girl,
picked the warm heart up from the table;
quick and careful so as not to break it—
it burned his fingers nonetheless.
He placed it down,
deep into the center of his chest,
where he hoped to keep it safe—
until she asked for it back.
